We feel that you are automatically involved in this issue
by witnessing it. You have the power to do something. The
negative effects go beyond a single unhealthy relationship
and ultimately affect everyone.
Effects on Victims
An abusive dating relationship has many negative effects
on the victim. Things like Emotional and physical suffering
are negative effects that often come to mind immediately.
Other long-term consequences include:
- Depression and suicidal thoughts
- Eating disorders
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Medical problems
- Emotional and psychological trauma
- Inability to succeed in school or at work
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
The victim of an unhealthy dating relationship may
create a new pattern of behavior for themselves, and
in turn, risk losing things like:
- Trust
- Friendships
- Behavioral patterns of a good relationship
- Future relationships
- Healthy thought patterns
- Self-esteem
The relationships of your teenage years affect your
relationships later in life. You may not be dating the
same person ten years from now, but the same ideals
you learned about acceptable behavior, respect, and
what feels right or wrong will stick with you.
